(Upper Section): In the year 537 B.C.E., Cyrus the Great proclaimed the restoration of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland. The theme of the "Haggai" panel is expressed in the Hebrew word, "avarech," "I shall bless." Symbolic of the rebuilding of the land and the completed Temple are the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive. Also included in the window is the seal of the King, indicating the establishment of Jewish independence. This seal is on the first set of stamps issued by the State of Israel for the High Holy Days. However, even after the land had been recultivated and a government reconstituted, the people replaced their initial religious enthusiasm for a new Temple with personal concern. Complained the prophet, "Is it a time for you, yourselves to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth waste?" Haggai, assisted by the prophet Zechariah, urged the political leader, Zerubbabel and Joshua, the High Priest to undertake the task of supervising the erection of the Temple. Haggai's zeal for the Second Temple was eventually communicated to his contemporaries. He prophesied that "the glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former. . . and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts." (Lower Section): Zechariah, a contemporary of Haggai, prophesied during the period of the Restoration. The Jewish people had just returned from the Babylonian exile. There was a spirit of thanksgiving but the Temple was not rebuilt. Zechariah warned the leaders to found a state based upon spiritual principles. This message is symbolized by the seven-pronged menorah from which olive trees miraculously are joined. The key word of this prophecy is "b'ruhi," "by my spirit." While the construction of a wall around Jerusalem had already begun, Zechariah indicated through the symbolism of the measuring rod (under the Menorah), that the Lord would be Israel's protection. However, the promise of Divine help was accompanied by a warning that justice must prevail in the newly established kingdom. God's omnipresence and justice are depicted in the stone with seven eyes. A further reminder that punishment is meted out to the unjust was the flying scroll (upper section) whose width is twice its length. Continually reminding the Jewish people against a spiritual letdown, Zechariah called for the day: "When the Lord shall be King over all earth: In that day, shall the Lord be one and His name one." |
