Sponsored by HIAS, the global Jewish nonprofit that protects refugees.

Join us at both Shabbat Services as we observe this cause.  Nationally, the program takes place on March 5-6, but for various reasons TBE will observe it in October.

Saturday Shabbat will highlight guest speakers Marilyn Breslow and Dadi Neopany, who will discuss refugee resettlement and how to advocate for change. They will briefly cover policy, the experience of those abroad and here, and how to be of help here in Richmond. Torah instructs us 36 times to care for the immigrant; this is an opportunity to extend the welcome in trying times.

Marilyn Breslow is former director of Refugee and Immigration Services, Board member of ReEstablish Richmond and social action chair of Congregation Or Ami.

Dadi Neopany MSW arrived as a refugee from Bhutan eleven years ago at age 20 with a wife and baby.

Today our news barely touches on people forced from their home seeking safety. We are focused on the disruption of the pandemic here, knowing that it adds to the risk of vulnerable populations. War, turmoil and persecution have placed 79 million people at risk worldwide. As Jews, we know persecution. The stories of refugee families in sordid camps touches us. We know these are regular people in extraordinary circumstances. Their plight needs witness and a voice.
