A Kohelet Intensive: Exploring the "Way of Solomon"

Tuesday, October 6, 2020 18 Tishrei 5781

7:30 PM - 9:00 PMZoom

led by Dr. Gary Goldberg in memory of Deborah Sue Minden

The book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), that is purported to have been authored by King Solomon--the monarch who had it all, is traditionally read and studied on Sukkot.  In this guided study, we will examine Kohelet in the manner in which it is presented by Rabbi Rami Shapiro in his book The Way of Solomon: Finding Joy and Contentment in the Wisdom of Ecclesiastes.  (Click here for more details)

Rabbi Rami views this biblical wisdom book as reflecting the wisdom and enlightenment of many Eastern faith traditions including Buddhism and Daoism.  For example, he translates the phrase 'Havel, Havel Haveilim'--normally translated as 'Vanity, vanity, all is vanity'--as 'Emptiness! Emptiness upon emptiness!' maintaining that 'The world is fleeting of form, empty of permanence, void of surety, (and) without certainty.'

We will look at the wisdom that informs the 'way of Solomon,'  recommendations from King Solomon, and the question that the joyous holiday of Sukkot asks:  "Where is hope to be found in a world of profound 'existential risk'?"
