Havurah Project

The goal of The Havurah Project is to bring our Beth-El community closer by nurturing newer and deeper relationships through Shabbat meals. Beginning in the fall, we will group participating congregants (open to folks of every age and stage) into small groups called “Havurot.” We will form these small groups with “deliberate mixing.” We want to connect people who don’t know each other (well), or who, because of demographics or geography, wouldn’t normally interact.  Every month, one or two members of each Havurah will host the others of their Havurah for a potluck Shabbat dinner.  Rabbi and Adira Knopf will host a kick-off Shabbat dinner in September as well as an end of the year celebration for all program participants.
Don’t observe Shabbat or regularly have Shabbat dinner? Don’t have a kosher home? Not a problem! Your observance-level doesn’t matter for the Havurah Project. All that’s required is a desire to form meaningful new relationships with other congregants and a commitment to participate in a monthly Shabbat dinner. Don’t know how to host a Shabbat dinner? Not to worry! We will provide hosts with everything they need to confidently host a beautiful Shabbat experience.

The Havurah Project was made possible through an IMPACT GRANT from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.
