SHALOM Israel RVA
Open to all in the community - join us!
Our mission is to lead members of the Richmond Jewish community and allies of all backgrounds into mature relationships with the land, people, and State of Israel. Through nuanced educational and cultural programming, facilitated conversations, guest speaker programs, panel discussions, cultural engagement opportunities, and travel experiences, SHALOM Israel RVA engages people intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually about Israel, inspiring them to contribute to a more compassionate, just, and peaceful future for Israel and its neighbors.
The polarized nature of the public and internal Jewish conversation about Israel, where Israel is either all-right or all-wrong, victim or oppressor, hero or villain, encourages tribal loyalty rather than honest and nuanced discussion about complex subjects. Many of us avoid talking about it for fear of angering or alienating others.
We have ceased to speak with each other about one of the most important Jewish subjects of our time because it is too “divisive.” A middle ground is desperately needed between propaganda and knee-jerk criticism, a space required for open dialogue, so people can form mature relationships and a better understanding of Israel.
We’d love your help to build SHALOM Israel RVA. If you are interested in taking a leadership role, please email Rabbi Knopf or Cantor Rosenblatt.
Temple Beth-El’s SHALOM Israel RVA is supported, in part, by a generous contribution from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.

JunJune 4 , 2023Author Discussion with Aniko Bodroghkozy
Sunday, Jun 4th 2:00p to 4:00p
Charlottesville’s “Summer of Hate” in 2017 became a world-wide media event putting the resurgence of aggressive, empowered white supremacy, antisemitism and “alt-right” extremism in the era of Trump on display, along with the antiracist and antifascist movement in opposition to it. Making #Charlottesville examines the meanings and significance of this seminal moment in recent U.S. history by putting it into dialogue and comparing it to key media events of the civil rights era, including the 1963 Birmingham and 1965 Selma campaigns. The event will be a Q&A with the author, moderated by Prof. Julian Hayter, Associate Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to the discussion of this important event in recent civil rights history in Virginia.
